PROCEDURE

1. Organizational moment
Dear boys and girls, you know that we have many questions. Where is London? Is London a big city? Is London in America?  
Welcome to our satellite link "London-Astana". Our party is devoted to two wonderful cities - Astana and London. We live in Kazakhstan and study Kazakh, one of the state languages of our Republic. Astana is the capital of our Republic. It's our Motherland and our pride. We also study English - the language of international relations. London is the capital of Great Britain. London is famous for its unique sightseeing and traditions. Today we want to tell you about the most famous sightseeing of Astana and London. Welcome to our teleconference between students from Astana, Kazakhstan and from London, England.

2. Exchange of greetings
Now, please, groups, greet each other:
-Good afternoon! – Afternoon!
-I’m glad to meet you.- Hi there!

- How do you do? – Hello, nice to meet you.
- What a pleasant surprise, …! It's a long time since I saw you last! – Oh, hi, …! Haven’t seen you for ages!

3. Presenting a visit card
First of all, we’d like to see your visit card. It’s the best way to know each other faster and better.
Астана- Ақзия Visit_card1: Good afternoon! We are a delegation from Kazakhstan. We study at the First in the college. We study a lot of subjects such as Maths, Kazakh, Russian, English, Self- cognition, etc. We participate in different competitions and like our college very much. We have different optional lessons in different subjects.

Лондон-Карина Visit_card2: Good afternoon! We are a delegation fromLondon, England. We study at the Grammar School. Every year we participate in activities: Sport, Music, Drama, Clubs.
At Grammar School we have Wednesday afternoon as a time for activities. All pupils must take part in something. Pupils are able to choose from 53 clubs and societies, from climbing, rowing and orienteering, to war games, debating and chess. Many of our departments also run clubs for pupils: the Chemistry Club and the Internet Club are examples. 

5.And let’s speak about the geography of the regions
Лондон -Гульмира: We are from England, from foggy Albion. Our country is a part of the UK. Our capital is London. The symbol of our country is a red rose. And our patron saint is St George. And this is our flag – a red cross on the white field. More than 7 million people live in London. London lies on both banks of the river Thames. London is not only the capital of the country; it is also a very big port, one of the greatest commercial centers in the world, a university city, and the seat of the government of Great Britain. And what is about your country?

Астана-Асель: Our country is large. It takes the ninth place in the world by area. We are situated in the middle of Asia. The symbol of our country is a snow leopard. Our capital is Astana. It’s a very big and beautiful city. And we live in the very North of Kazakhstan. Our city stands on the bank of the Ishim river.

6.O’k. Now what can you say about your political outlook
Лондон-Фариза: Our country is a kingdom. The Head of our country is the Queen. The power is given from a parent to a child. But the real power belongs to the Parliament and to the Government with the Prime-Minister. The Parliament has two Houses: the House of Lords (its members are selected) and the House of Commons (they are elected).

Астан-Назгүл: Kazakhstan is a republic. The first and only President is Nursultan Nazarbayev. He is also the commander in chief. He is elected by people. The prime minister chairs the Cabinet of Ministers and serves as Kazakhstan's head of government.
Kazakhstan has a bicameral Parliament, too. There is the lower house (the Majilis) and the upper house (the Senate).

7. Now boys and girls let’s speak about sightseeing of your countries.

Лондон-Салтанат:  The heart of London is the City. It is the oldest part of London. Many people work in the City but very few live here. There are many banks and offices here. You can visit some interesting places in the City or near it.  One of them is the Tower of London. In different times of the history of London the Tower was a fortress, a palace, a prison and even the King's Zoo. A lot of people lost their heads here. The Tower of London tells of the many terrible and cruel things in the history of England.

Лондон-Біржан: Now it is the museum. You can see a lot of interesting things in the halls of the White Tower. The Crown Jewels are kept at it. Its square walls are white and very tall. There are always black ravens in the Tower of London. They appeared there when the Tower was the King's prison - those who were its prisoners never got freedom: they were executed or died themselves, and their bodies were thrown down the walls of the Tower. They became food for ravens. Still then ravens have lived there.

Лондон-Наурызбай: One of the greatest English churches, St. Paul's Cathedral, is not far from the Tower of London. Old St. Paul's Cathedral was made of wood and burnt in the Great Fire of London. The famous architect Sir Christopher Wren rebuilt it in the 17-th century. He started in 1675. It took him 35 years. It is a very beautiful building with many tall columns and towers. In one of its towers there is one of the largest bells in the world.

Астана-Асель: What is the main street in London?

Лондон-Салтанат: There isn`t the main street in London but there is the main square here. It is Trafalgar Square.
It is in the centre of London. Some people say that it is the most beautiful place in London. Tastes differ! In the middle of the square stands a tall column. It is a monument to Admiral Nelson. Four bronze lions look at the square from the monument. There are 2 splendid fountains in the square. They are in front of the National Gallery which is one of the best picture galleries in the world.

Лондон-Карина: The political centre of London is Westminster. It is the part of London where there are a lot of offices. It was Edward the Confessor who built it in the 11th century. William the Conqueror didn't like the palace, so he completely rebuilt it. Other kings and queens extended it and made it their main residence. The last king to live there was King Henry VIII, but in 1512, after a fire, he moved out and the Palace of Westminster ceased to be a royal residence and became the seat of the Houses of Parliament.  

Лондон-Фариза: On the left there is a long grey building with towers which are the Houses of Parliament. This building is really Westminster Palace. The large clock in one of the towers is Big Ben - the clock and the bell of the clock tower of the Houses of Parliament. You can hear the sound of Big Ben every hour in London. The clock and the bell got their names after Sir Benjamin Hall who was in charge of building it. He was a tall man, whose nickname was Big Ben. So people know the clock as Big Ben.

Лондон-Салтанат: On the other side of Parliament Square is Westminster Abbey. It is very beautiful and very famous. It is also very old. It is more than 900 years old. It is built in gothic style. There are a lot of monuments and statues there. Many English kings and queens are buried here. Westminster Abbey is famous for the Poet's Corner where great English poets and writers are also buried.

Лондон-Наурызбай; The Queen of England lives in Buckingham Palace. It is a wonderful large building with a golden monument in front of it. It is the Queen Victoria Memorial. It was built in the 18^th century by the architect John Nash. It is a big grey stone building. When the Queen is at home, there is the Queen's flag flying over it. Thousands of tourists from all over the world come to Buckingham Palace every day to see the traditional ceremony of changing the Guards.

Лондон-Салтанат:The British Museum. And now you can see the British Museum. It has one of the largest libraries in the world. There are many old books and manuscripts there. Many great people worked in this library.

Лондон-Карина: Fantastic! And here is the river Thames. London stands on both banks of the river. The Thames is the deepest and most beautiful river in Britain. There are 27 bridges over the Thames and 8 tunnels under it.

 

Астана-Асель:  Where is the starting point of your tour around Astana? Of course, it is the symbol of the capital - Baiterek. The monument embodies the idea of the Kazakh people related to the structure of the universe. Monument Baiterek was opened in 2002 and has become a landmark in history of Kazakhstan,

Астана-Ақзия:   There are a lot of interesting places to visit in Astana, among them museums, monuments, and entertainment complexes.
A visit to the Museum of the First President of Kazakhstan might be a remarkable one. You'll see there subjects of furnishings and interiors, souvenirs, books, and paintings that were gifted to the President, weapon, personal things and documents, work of graphic and decorative-applied arts and lots of other things

Астана-Назгуль:  This is a Piramida. There is the concert and opera hall for 1,500 viewers who during the opening ceremony witnessed the concert of Montserrat Caballe. The pyramid has conference rooms, exhibition areas, galleries, and other facilities. The largest hall there is the Cheops Atrium, the area of over 2 thousand square meters accommodating the enormous "General Development Plan Astana until 2030.”

Астана-Темірлан:  Khan Shatyr ("Royal Marquee") is a giant transparent tent in Astana, the capital city of Kazakhstan. , it is an urban-scale internal park, shopping and entertainment venue with squares and cobbled streets, a boating river, shopping centre, minigolf and indoor beach resort.

Астана-Назерке:  On the 15th of December, 2008 there was a grand opening of the "Palace of Independence”. In the "Palace of Independence” are held various arrangements as meetings, forums, congresses, exhibitions, concerts, international conferences and other state events.

9. Table manners
And in every country you must behave yourselves. And table manners are not an exception. Now let’s see who is more qualified in table manners. What modal verb will help us in it? (should)

10. The traditions and customs:  Every nation has its own manners, customs, traditions and holidays. What can you say about your holidays?

Please, let’s speak about the traditions and customs. Please, who wants to begin?

Лондон-Гульмира: The traditional British breakfast is a cooked meal of bacon, eggs and sausages, preceded by cereal or fruit and followed by toast. Nowadays, this large meal is served mainly in hotels and is very popular with foreign visitors. Britons may this big breakfast at weekends or on specials occasions but prefer a smaller, healthier meal to start a normal day. The most popular choices are:

• a bowl of cornflakes and a cup of tea
• a bowl of muesli and fresh orange juice
• a piece of toast with marmalade
• a yoghurt and fresh fruit with black coffee or tea.

Лондон-Карина: Lunch is a light meal and is eaten at school or work. Lunch takes 30 – 40 minutes. Some offices have installed a microwave oven for employees to use.

Лондон-Салтанат: Popular lunches are: a salad or a sandwich; a baked potato; beans on toast.

Лондон-Фариза: Dinner is usually the main meal of the day and consists of two courses – meat or fish and vegetables followed by a dessert or pudding

Лондон-Біржан: Afternoon tea is a small meal, not a drink. Now most ordinary British families do not have time for afternoon tea at home, but in the past it ways a tradition. It became popular about a hundred and fifty years ago,

Лондон-Наурыз:  Fish and chips is the classic English take – away food. It is usually bought ready cooked at special shops – fish and chip shop (or "chippies” as they are sometimes called) – and taken away wrapped in paper to be eaten at home or outside. If you go to a fish and chip shop, you’ll be asked if you want salt and vinegar to be sprinkled over your chips. Be careful because sometimes they give you too much!

Астана-Асель:  He or she is first treated to kumys (fermented mare's milk), shubat (fermented camel's milk) or airan (fermented cow's milk), then to tea with milk or cream, baursaks (fried dough balls), raisins, irimshik (dried cheese balls), and kurt (dried cheese and whey).

Астана-Назерке: Kazakhs eat at a low table called a "dastarkhan" and the most popular dish has always been the national meat dish, "beshparmak" ("five fingers" because of the manner in which it is eaten).

Астана-Назгул:  The meat is eaten with a boiled pasta sheet and a meat broth called shorpa, usually served in traditional Kazakh bowls called "pialas". At the end of the meal kumys is served, then tea.

Астана-Ақзия:  Traditionally Kazakh cuisine was mostly based on meat and milk products. But more recently vegetables, fruits, fish, seafood, baked dishes and sweets have been added to the list of delights Kazakhs offer to their guests.
11. Holidays
Name me the holidays that are celebrated in both countries: St Valentine’s Day, New Year, Easter, Christmas, Fool’s Day.
And now, you had to prepare a telling about one specific holiday of your country. Астана-Асель:  Nauryz (Islamic New Year) is one of the biggest holidays in Central Asia. In Kazakhstan it is celebrated on the day of the spring equinox, March 22. On that day, the streets of villages and towns are transformed. Guests are hosted in beautiful yurts with the traditional Nauryz kozhe dish made of seven traditional ingredients. People respecting this nearly month-long holiday forgive each others' debts and offences.

Лондон---------:  There are 8 public holidays in Great Britain and on these days people don’t go to work: Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Easter, May Day, Spring Bank Holiday, Late Summer Bank Holiday. All the public holidays (except New Year’s Day, Christmas and Boxing Day) don’t fall on the same date each year. The most common type of celebration is a New Year party. At midnight people listen to the chiming of Big Ben and sing the song.
